Miss Taunton pageant organisers appeal for entrants
Organisers of the Miss Taunton pageant 2011 are appealing for contestants after receiving just one entrant.
The Taunton Carnival Committee says it is normally "inundated" with entries for the role of Carnival Queen.
But this year, despite a number of requests for application forms, only one entry has been received.
Committee chair Marilyn House said: "I was desperate at the beginning of the week but now we've had an entrant and two requests for application forms.
"But worse then having no one enter would be to have just one entrant."
The Miss Taunton competition received 20 applications last year.
The winner, selected to ride on the town carnival's Royal Float, was Lizzy Grigg.
This year the winner will receive a prize including £200 in cash, a meal for two and a dress for carnival night.
The Miss Taunton competition is open to anyone aged between 16 and 30, who lives, works or has been educated in the Taunton Deane area.
Duties include carnival queen on the South Somerset circuit (Taunton, Wellington and Illminster) and turning on Taunton's Christmas lights.
"We're looking for someone with personality who is not too shy and can converse happily with people," said Mrs House.
"And if we don't get anyone, I don't know what we'll do.
"We'll either have to do away with a Miss Taunton or have to ask last year's Miss Taunton to come in for another year."
The closing date for entries is 30 June with a selection evening to be held at the Allerford Inn, near Norton Fitzwarren, on 8 July.
