Ceremonies mark building progress on Bridgwater schools

"Topping out" ceremonies have taken place to mark significant progress in the rebuilding of three schools in Bridgwater.

The builders' tradition of topping out involves planting a yew tree branch at the highest level of a new building to bring good fortune.

Work on Chilton Trinity Technology College, Robert Blake Science College and Elmwood School is scheduled to be completed in June 2012.

The schools will open in October 2012.

Councillor Ken Maddock, leader of Somerset County Council, officiated at the ceremony.

He said: "I'm pleased to be a part of this important ceremony.

"These schools demonstrate the council's commitment to invest in the future of our young people and provide facilities for our community to enjoy."
