Royal Marines from 40 Commando based near Taunton have returned home after a four-month training exercise in the Mediterranean and the Gulf.

About 70 marines on board HMS Albion took part in joint exercises with Saudi Arabian and Omani armed forces.

Operation Cougar begun earlier than planned this year at the start of the civil unrest in some Arab countries.

It was in case the marines were needed for evacuating civilians and helping distribute humanitarian aid.

The Royal Marines are due to leave for more training in America in mid-September.
