Two Somerset barn fires involving tonnes of hay

Firefighters in Somerset have dealt with two separate barn fires involving more than 100 tonnes of hay.

Crews had to use a bulldozer to move 60 tonnes of hay from a burning barn at Brambles Farm near Frome at about 02:00 BST to stop the blaze spreading.

At 11:55 BST they were then called to South Hill Farm, Cranmore, near Shepton Mallett, to deal with 80 tonnes of hay which was "well alight".

Four fire engines and 27 firefighters attended the scene in Cranmore.

Describing the first fire in Frome, a spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "Machinery has been removed from the affected barn.

"Approximately 60 tonnes of hay has been removed using a mechanical digger. "
