Traffic wardens to combat illegal parking in Somerset

Traffic wardens could be introduced in Somerset to combat illegal parking, the county council has said.

Currently, only the district of Taunton Deane has wardens but in other areas parking enforcement is dealt with by the police.

The county council now wants the boroughs to allow it to hand out parking tickets and is also proposing taking over enforcement in car parks.

A statement from the council said it was investigating "all options".

"There are many complaints about inconsiderate motorists parking illegally and causing congestion in towns across the county.

"Somerset County Council continues to investigate all options and work with district councils to see if we can help in this area."

Sedgemoor and West Somerset District councils have accepted the offer in principle.

Mendip District Council has not yet made a decision while South Somerset is supporting the county council but wants to maintain control of enforcement in car parks.
