Bath has been selected as one of more than 30 UK places to host an event as part of the Paralympic Torch Relay.

A flame celebration will be held at Bath's Recreation Ground on 25 August 2012, before the Games' opening.

An ambassador will be selected by the council and ParalympicsGB to collect part of the flame for the event.

Four flames will be lit in London, Belfast, Edinburgh and Cardiff and will be united to create the Paralympic Flame at Stoke Mandeville.

The torch will then be carried on a 24-hour overnight relay to London for the opening ceremony on 29 August.

Lib Dem council leader Paul Crossley, said it was a "tremendous honour for Bath and North East Somerset Council".

"The University of Bath is the base for the ParalympicsGB team for London 2012, who are due to leave Bath for London from Sunday 26 August," he said.

"We want to ensure that as a city we give them a huge community send-off and wish them the very best of luck. We plan to do this as part of our flame celebration on Saturday 25 August."
