Derelict baby food factory in Wells sold to Crest Nicholson

A factory in Somerset which has stood empty for the past seven years has been sold to a developer.

The Nutricia baby food factory on Glastonbury Road in Wells closed in 2005 after the company said it had more factories than it needed in Europe.

The site has been sold to Crest Nicholson which says it wants to build 143 "high-end" homes and possibly incorporate a care home scheme.

Described by locals as an eyesore, the land is fenced off and rubbish-strewn.

Judith Ludovino, chairman of the Wells Chamber of Commerce, said it would be good news if there were employment opportunities on the site.

"We are very short of employers of any size in Wells," she said.

Tim Beale, managing director of Crest Nicholson South West, said it was hoped that building would start in early 2013.
