Fire-hit Highbridge Hotel could be given to community

The site of a Somerset hotel destroyed by fire in 2008 could be given to the community, its owner says.

Another fire broke out in the former Highbridge Hotel on Huntspill Road, in Highbridge last year, leaving only its Grade II-listed frontage standing.

Owner Mead Realisations, is considering what to do with the remains of the building, and the former cattle market it owns in the town.

The company said it could build houses on the former market site.

Lib Dem councillor Joe Leach said he thought housing was not right for the area, and that he wanted to see a doctor's surgery and business space.
