Pedestrian dies after being struck by bus in Taunton

A pedestrian has died after being struck by a bus.

The person was hit by the First bus on East Reach in Taunton, at about 15:10 BST.

The main road, which takes traffic out of the town centre towards the M5 motorway, was closed in both directions while investigations were carried out.

A spokeswoman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "A pedestrian and a bus were in collision and the person was fatally injured."

First said in a statement: "We can confirm there has been an incident in Taunton involving one of our vehicles, which was operating on service 4 at the time.

"A pedestrian was knocked over and sadly passed away as a result.

"The exact circumstances of this incident are not yet clear but this will be fully investigated.

"In the meantime our thoughts are with the friends and family of the person involved, to whom we offer our sincerest condolences."

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.
