Weston-super-Mare's Dolphin Square redevelopment a step closer

The latest phase in the multi-million pound redevelopment of the former Dolphin Square site in Weston-super-Mare has been given the go-ahead.

Phase three of the £45m proposals includes a gym, seven-screen cinema, a bowling alley and restaurants.

North Somerset Council said the fourth and final retail phase of the project was yet to be agreed.

The developer, McLaren Life, has said the work will be finished by the end of 2014.

Deputy council leader Elfan Ap Rees said: "We think phase three will kick-start new interest in phase four because people can see this is actually happening on the ground.

"My understanding is the developers are talking with a number of retailers about the size of plots they want and so on.

"The important thing is this project is moving forward. We very much want to see that end of the town centre being redeveloped.

"We are confident it will bring new retail businesses and employment into the town as well as attracting people outside of Weston-super-Mare to use those facilities."

McLaren Life bought Dolphin Square in December 2010.
