A teenager has died after the car she was in left the road and ended up in the River Parrett, police said.

The driver, a 21-year-old man, managed to escape but Katie Bagwell, 19, was trapped in the submerged car and declared dead at the scene.

The accident happened near to Martock, close to the junction with Hawthorn Hill, at about 01:10 BST on Sunday.

The driver has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and released on police bail.

Miss Bagwell, a recently qualified graphic designer, had just left college and started a new job.

Her sister Laura, 25, and brothers Luke and Jake paid tribute to her.

"We're all absolutely devastated and in shock," said 16-year-old Luke.

"There'll always be one missing now - I can't believe she's gone," said Laura.

"She is my best friend... I miss her so much," said 21-year-old Jake.
