Man found dead in police cell in Bridgwater
A man arrested after a fire in Somerset has died while in custody, police have said.
He was held following the blaze in College Street, Burnham-on-Sea, at about 21:25 GMT on Sunday.
The man, 40, was taken to the custody centre at Bridgwater Express Park and charged with a number of offences.
He had been due to appear at Taunton Deane Magistrates Court on Tuesday but was found "unresponsive" in his cell at 04:00 that day.
Paramedics were called but the man was pronounced dead in his cell at about 04:10.
Avon and Somerset Police said the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) was investigating the man's death.
He had been charged on the Monday evening with being drunk and disorderly and hindering a member of the emergency services.
In a statement, the IPCC said: "The IPCC was informed of the death by Avon and Somerset Police and an independent investigation declared at approximately 04:50."
The multimillion-pound police custody centre opened in September.
