Drivers are being warned of disruption after Highways England announced a major junction of the A303 has had to be closed for "urgent repairs".

One lane westbound between Podimore roundabout and Cartgate roundabout in Somerset has been shut after a retaining wall became unstable.

A spokeswoman said the wall - located next to the carriageway and the verge - required "immediate attention".

Highways England said road users should allow extra time to complete journeys.

It said staff would be "working around the clock" to ensure the lane was opened again as quickly as possible, which includes filling the ditch next to the carriageway with 3,500 tonnes of stone.

"Work on an approximately 200ft (61m) section of the wall and verge will continue until the evening," the spokeswoman added.

The A303 is the shortest route for those travelling from London and the South East, to Devon and Cornwall.
