Several houses have been evacuated after a gas pipe was ruptured by a digger in Somerset.

Wales & West Utilities said the incident in Western Road in Yeovil has caused a "significant gas leak".

It is believed to have been caused when the digger hit the gas main during work on a new housing development.

A gas spokesman said repairing the damage would be "a complex job" and the company could not say when it will be completed.

"We know this is inconvenient, but this work is essential to make sure that people, homes and businesses are kept safe," he added.

"Our engineering teams will be working around the clock until this situation is resolved and the damaged gas pipe is repaired."
