Motorist killed when car hits tree near Shepton Mallet

A woman died when she lost control of her car and hit a tree when trying to overtake a lorry in Somerset.

The incident happened on Old Wells Road at Cranmore near Shepton Mallet at about 15:25 BST on Monday.

Avon and Somerset Police said the woman was trying to avoid a car approaching from the opposite direction when her vehicle mounted a verge and collided with a tree.

She suffered serious head injuries and died at the scene.

The road was closed for eight hours.
