Man, 18, hit by taxi in Rotherham after 'dispute'

An 18-year-old man suffered serious injuries when he was hit by a taxi following an alleged dispute over a bill, police have said.

The incident on Disraeli Grove, Maltby, happened at about 0355 BST on Sunday.

Police said the man got out of the taxi while his girlfriend remained inside the vehicle "disputing the bill".

The driver is then alleged to have locked the woman in the car and driven off, hitting the teenager. A 27-year-old man has been arrested.

South Yorkshire Police said the taxi was believed to have turned in the street and collided with the man.

It then stopped at the end of the street, where the man's girlfriend got out. The vehicle, a blue Toyota Avensis, is then said to have driven away.

A force spokeswoman said the 18-year-old man had suffered "life-threatening internal injuries". He is being treated in Rotherham General District Hospital.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact South Yorkshire Police.
