A woman died and her husband has life-threatening injuries after their van hit a tree in South Yorkshire.

The accident happened as the 63-year-old woman and her 64-year-old husband were travelling along the A19 Doncaster Road towards Askern on Saturday night.

Their Mercedes Vito van came off the road after it was in collision with a Ford Transit van which was overtaking.

Two males in the Transit van, aged 17 and 19, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The teenagers, both from Doncaster, escaped with minor injuries.

Failed to stop

The seriously injured man is at Doncaster Royal Infirmary with broken ribs, fractures to his left leg and left wrist and bruising to his lungs.

During the overtaking manoeuvre the Transit van also collided with a Ford Ka which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The Ka driver, a 54-year-old Doncaster woman, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police investigating the crash are trying to trace a dark coloured car that carried out the same overtaking manoeuvre just moments before the fatal collision.

It failed to stop after the crash.

The dark car and the yellow van had been trying to overtake the Mercedes Vito van and a silver Land Rover Freelander at the time of the collision.
