A 17-year-old boy has been re-arrested on suspicion of murder after police searching for a missing teenage mother found a body in a Rotherham canal.

Officers had been searching for Laura Wilson, 17, who was last seen on Saturday in the Holmes area.

A body was pulled from the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation Canal on Tuesday.

Police said the boy was initially arrested on suspicion of assault but was re-arrested on Tuesday night.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Due to the discovery of a female body in the canal near Steel Street, Rotherham, yesterday afternoon, police last night re-arrested a 17-year-old man on suspicion of murder as a matter of course.

"The 17-year-old was originally arrested on Tuesday morning on suspicion of assault and remains in police custody assisting officers with their inquiries."

A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Wednesday and the body will then be formally identified.

Police said Miss Wilson's four-month-old daughter is being cared for by relatives, who have been informed of the discovery.
