A man suffered serious spinal injuries when the vehicle he was travelling in was involved in a collision on the M1 and careered down an embankment.
South Yorkshire Police said the unnamed 21-year-old man was a rear seat passenger in a BMW car that left the motorway near junction 38 at Haigh.
Officers said the BMW and another car collided on the southbound carriageway.
The man, who was from the London area, was in the car with four other people who suffered minor injuries.
