The family of an eight-year-old boy who died after falling into a Mexborough canal have spoken of their devastation at his death.

Matthew Cartwright was described as a "beautiful, loving little boy and we miss him terribly".

The youngster died on Tuesday after falling into the Swinton canal.

Emergency services were called to the canal on Monday evening. After being rescued Matthew was flown by helicopter to Rotherham District General Hospital.

He was later transferred to the Children's Hospital in Sheffield where he died with his family, who come from Mexborough, by his side.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish the exact cause of death.

Matthew was with a family member at the time of the incident.

Tributes, including flowers, teddy bears and balloons, have been left at the canal.

Matthew's parents, who live locally, said they did not want to comment.

Police do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances.
