MP calls for quick inquiry into Barnsley ethnic charity

A town's MP has called for an inquiry into the financial running of a charity to be dealt with swiftly because of the groups that rely on it.

Barnsley Black and Ethnic Minority Initiative is under police investigation after the council expressed "serious concerns".

Now Barnsley Central Labour MP Dan Jarvis says many organisations rely on help from the charity.

He said: "I hope the situation will be resolved as quickly as possible."

South Yorkshire Police has confirmed it is investigating after concerns were raised over the governance and finances of the organisation.

Nobody from the charity was available to comment.

According to the Barnsley Black and Ethnic Minority Initiative's website, the group was formed to "to promote good race relations and racial harmony" within the community.

Mr Jarvis said: "The charity provided a lot of support, a lot of very valuable support, to a number of worthwhile organisations across Barnsley.

"I hope on their behalf that the situation will be resolved as quickly as possible.

"So they [other organisations] will have the security and knowledge that they will continue hopefully to receive funding and support in the future."
