Barnsley woman dies after car hit by goods vehicle

A 72-year-old Barnsley woman has been killed and another injured after their car was hit by a goods vehicle.

The car, which had broken down, was on the A635 Barnsley Road near Doncaster when it was hit by a silver Mercedes LGV at about 11:10 GMT.

The car overturned, while the goods vehicle hit a tree before coming to rest, police said.

Its driver, a 38-year-old Barnsley man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The 72-year-old driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, also from Barnsley, suffered slight cuts to her face.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the crash, or who can say how the LGV was being driven before the accident, to contact them.
