Thurnscoe death: Philip Alan Smith was stabbed

A man who died after a disturbance in a South Yorkshire street had been stabbed, post-mortem tests have shown.

Philip Alan Smith, 36, was found injured in Church Street, Thurnscoe, near Barnsley, on Saturday afternoon.

Officers found Mr Smith, who lived in the village, near the junction with Houghton Road. He was taken to Barnsley District General Hospital but later died from his injuries.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Three other men who had been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder have since been released on bail.

Det Supt Andy Thompson, who is leading the investigation, said house-to-house inquiries were taking place alongside forensic investigations.

He urged anyone who witnessed the disturbance to contact South Yorkshire Police.
