Internet service provider RiPWiRE closes

An internet service provider based in South Yorkshire has closed, blaming issues with the roll-out of superfast broadband in the region.

RiPWiRE, based in Rotherham said it had experienced a range of issues with Digital Region.

The project, which launched in 2010, has cost more than £90m.

RiPWiRE was not available to comment on how many people would be affected by the closure of the company.

Last month Rotherham Council, which part funded the scheme, started an inquiry into the roll-out, after concerns were raised by councils in South Yorkshire.

Nobody from Digital Region was available to comment.

In a statement RiPWiRE said: "We have experienced a host of commercial and technical issues which led to halted roll-outs from major NHS organisations and general network instability for our residential users which grew more and more difficult for us to support on an ongoing basis."
