A man's body has been recovered from a South Yorkshire river by helicopter.

South Yorkshire Police said the body was pulled from the River Don at Sprotborough, Doncaster at about 18:45 BST, after having been spotted on Sunday evening.

High waters and a strong current meant the man's body could not be retrieved from the river earlier.

An RAF Rescue helicopter was called in to help with the recovery.

The recovery was delayed by more than 46 hours because of what police described as extremely difficult conditions.

Police said the man's body had not yet been identified.
