Barnsley Hospice midnight walk cancelled due to rain

A night-time walk in aid of Barnsley Hospice, which has attracted hundreds of supporters, has been cancelled because of the weather.

Organisers said they had taken the "difficult decision" to postpone the event scheduled for through the night on Saturday.

A statement on the hospice website said the site at Grange Lane was waterlogged after 48 hours of continual rain.

Organisers said they hoped to reschedule in the near future.

The walk, now in its sixth year, involves supporters walking either five or 10 miles.

Last year's event raised £100,000 with 1,350 people taking part.

The statement said: "The forecast is extremely poor for the early hours of Sunday morning, heavy rain is expected and the air temperature is predicted to be too cold for comfort.

"The safety of our walkers is of paramount importance. This decision has not been taken lightly.

"We hope to reschedule in the near future please keep checking our website for further updates."
