Thurnscoe death: Gary McKeown admits Philip Smith killing

A murder trial in South Yorkshire has been halted after the defendant's plea to the lesser offence of manslaughter was accepted.

Gary McKeown, 37, stabbed Philip Alan Smith several times in Thurnscoe, near Barnsley, on 28 January.

Mr Smith, 36, from Thurnscoe, was found injured in Church Street after a disturbance and died later in hospital.

McKeown, of Church Street, Thurnscoe, is due to be sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday.

Following Mr Smith's death, his family issued a statement, saying he was a "much loved member of a large family and we will never forget him".
