Sheffield City Council estimate 600 jobs affected by cuts
Six hundred jobs are estimated to be affected by cuts at Sheffield City Council, it has confirmed.
In October the council warned hundreds of jobs could be lost, as it sought to save £50m from its 2013-2014 budget, £10m more than initially expected.
The council has said a consultation will take place early next year between staff and unions over the potential redundancies.
Unison said the news would effect local businesses and the economy.
The Labour-run authority has already shed 1,400 jobs over the past two years.
The council said it hoped savings could be sought through several means including voluntary severance, voluntary early retirement and positions not being filled.
Julie Toner, Director of Human Resources at Sheffield City Council, said: "We will work hard to reduce the figure and wherever possible avoid compulsory redundancies.
"We appreciate this is a tough time for our staff and we will work with them and the trade unions to lessen the impact wherever we can."
Unison branch secretary, Rod Padley, said: "The majority of services have been cut back to the bone, they are surviving on the goodwill and dedication of a conscientious staff group...
"The public has largely been shielded from the impact of this governments public sector cuts, but not for much longer.
Mr Padley added: "The council is responsible for making key decisions over which services will be affected and how. Unison will scrutinise each and every decision."
Staff will also be asked to consider ways of making savings, including reduced hours, career breaks and an extended increment freeze from April 2013.
