Doncaster crash kills teenager and injures baby

A teenager has died and a one-year-old girl has suffered a life-threatening head injury in a car crash.

The accident happened on the A638 Great North Road at Redhouse, Doncaster, on Thursday at about 12:20 GMT.

The car started a U-turn from a lay-by and collided with a lorry, South Yorkshire Police said.

Luke Hardwick, 18, from Swinton, died of his injuries. The baby girl, from Wath, is in a critical condition at Sheffield Children's Hospital.

Mr Hardwick and the girl were passengers in the silver BMW car.

The 31-year-old male driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been bailed while inquiries continue.

He suffered a whiplash injury and another passenger, a 22-year-old woman, is thought to have a broken hand and a minor facial injury.

The driver of the lorry, a 36-year-old man, suffered back and leg injuries and his 20-year-old male passenger had lower back injuries.

Police have appealed for information.
