A man who admitted carrying out sexual offences against a 15-year-old girl in Rotherham has been jailed for seven years and eight months.

Gareth Ball, 35, of Rotherview Road, pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a child under 16 at a previous hearing.

Ball was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday and has been placed on the sex offenders register for life.

Police said he had supplied the victim with alcohol before "engaging in sexual activity" with her in August last year.

Det Con Carla Dodsworth, of South Yorkshire Police, said: "This man took advantage of the trust of a young girl.

"I feel that the sentence he has received reflects the seriousness of the offence and I hope it will enable the girl and her family to try and move forward.

"We worked closely with the family to provide support alongside the Children's Independent Sexual Violence Advocate from the Sexual Assault Referral Centre and Social Care."
