Arrests over 'vigilante' action linked to sexual assault

Four people have been arrested following disorder police have linked to "vigilante" action after reports of a sexual assault on a teenager.

A 13-year-old girl was assaulted on 3 November on Ivanhoe Road, Thurcroft, South Yorkshire.

Disorder in the area was reported on both Thursday and Friday evenings and involved about 50 people.

Officers said the four, aged 15, 17, 20 and 35-years-old, had been arrested on suspicion of a breach of the peace.

Only minor damage was reported following the disturbances.

South Yorkshire Police said a 21-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the sexual assault and the investigation was ongoing.

Ch Insp Ian Womersley said patrols in the area had been increased.

He added: "The man arrested in connection with the sexual assault is not living in the Thurcroft area and South Yorkshire Police will take robust action against anyone participating in vigilante action in relation to this incident, or indeed, any incident."
