A man who repeatedly raped a girl when she was aged 12 to 16, then buried their dead baby beneath his metal scrap yard, has been jailed for 13 years.

Mark Whitehurst admitted nine counts of sexual activity with a child, two rapes of a girl aged under 16 and one count of concealment of a baby's birth.

Whitehurst , 47, of Middleport, Stoke-on-Trent, was sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Wednesday.

Whitehurst will be on the sex offenders' register for life.

The rapes and other sexual offences were committed between 2003 and 2007 against the same person, the court heard.

His victim gave birth to his child when she was 15.

Whitehurst was arrested on 25 June 2010, when Staffordshire Police discovered the baby's remains buried beneath concrete in a yard he was renting for his scrap metal business in Smithpool Road in Fenton.

A cause of death has yet to be established for the baby, Staffordshire Police said.
