Elderly man dies in house blaze in Tamworth
An 87-year-old man has died after a house fire in Staffordshire in the early hours.
The man was found in a downstairs bedroom by crews called to Ashby Road, Tamworth, shortly after 0135 GMT.
"When ambulance staff arrived firefighters were bringing the man out of the property," a service spokesman said.
He was given treatment at the scene and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The fire was on the ground floor of a semi-detached cottage, Staffordshire Fire Service said.
Staffordshire Police said early indications suggested the fire was not suspicious but it was carrying out further investigations with the fire service.
"The 87-year-old man who lived alone at the address was taken to Sutton Coldfield's Good Hope Hospital where sadly he was pronounced dead at 3am. No-one else was injured," a police spokesman said.
