Flu suffers in Stoke-on-Trent urged not to visit A&E

Health bosses in Stoke-on-Trent are urging people not to go to hospital if they have symptoms of flu.

Steve Fawcett, medical director at NHS Stoke-on-Trent, said the number of cases in the area had risen over the past week.

He suggested people "manage" their flu illnesses at home as hospitals are busy and had been stretched over the festive season.

Mr Fawcett said using simple remedies at home could cure flu.

'Incredibly busy'

"People still seem to do things which aren't necessarily helping themselves or the hospital system or the healthcare system," he said.

"So people do need that support and that reminder and the confidence to know that they can manage most of these illnesses on their own with just simple remedies.

"What we do know is the hospital is incredibly busy and really has been over the entire festive season."
