Cannock Chase petition over forestry sell off
More than 1,500 people have signed a petition started by a Staffordshire councillor to stop ministers selling off woodlands, such as Cannock Chase.
The government has launched a consultation on the future of Forestry Commission lands in England.
However, it said ancient woodlands will be kept out of commercial hands
The petition was started by Stoke-on-Trent city councillor Mark Davis who said he was worried land could be closed off to the public if sold.
Mr Davis, a Labour councillor, cited a case in the Lake District where an entrance into a wood was closed to cars after it was sold last year.
"While there is a still a legal right to walk across the land if you close the car park and gate entrance, it means people are less likely to use it," he said.
