Staffordshire firefighters attacked on call-out

Firefighters in Chesterton were attacked by youths who pelted them with bottles and stones, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

A spokesman said youths deliberately set fire to rubbish near to the Rosevale Business Park on Rosevale Road at about 1915 BST on 2 April.

They then targeted firefighters who arrived to put the fire out.

None of the firefighters was seriously injured and the incident has been reported to Staffordshire Police.

'Verbal abuse'

Station manager Andy Kinsman said: "This type of behaviour is not acceptable. Our crews are just doing their jobs and it is disgraceful that they were treated this way by members of the community they are trying to protect.

"We will not tolerate this type of behaviour. We will prosecute wherever possible and all of our appliances have CCTV fitted which will be used to provide evidence where necessary.

"This isn't the first incident we've had in the area where anti-social behaviour has been a factor."

He said crews had been subjected to verbal abuse and they had seen an increase in malicious calls from a public call box in Chesterton.
