Newcastle-under-Lyme fire was started 'deliberately'

A building fire on Marsh Parade in Newcastle-under-Lyme was started deliberately Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has revealed.

Crews from Newcastle, Longton, Ashley, and Hanley were called to the derelict building, shortly after midnight.

A spokesman for the fire service said once the fire was out they searched the building to ensure there was no-one inside and were able to confirm this.

He added a fire investigation concluded the fire was started deliberately.

Station manager Andy Kinsman said: "The main fire was extinguished earlier this morning however crews have remained on scene using a hose reel jet to monitor hotspots.

"A building inspector has also been in attendance as the fire has left the building structurally unsafe. The incident has now been passed onto the police to continue with their investigations."
