Officer stable after Burton upon Trent incident
A police officer is stable in hospital after his skull was fractured while dealing with a man in Staffordshire in the early hours.
The 47-year-old officer attended Horninglow Road, Burton upon Trent, to deal with a disturbance in the street at about 0115 BST on Saturday.
The officer, who was seen to fall, had been on routine patrol.
A member of the public who reported being assaulted has left hospital. A 37-year-old man has been arrested.
The officer, with eight years' service, based at Burton, was taken to Queen's Hospital in the town.
