Cannock Chase Labour leader agrees to expenses cap

The leader of a Staffordshire council says he has capped his allowances £2,000 below his maximum entitlement to reflect the difficult economic times.

Cannock Chase District Council's Labour leader George Adamson said he would claim £18,150 from a possible special responsibility allowance of £20,166.

He said when people were losing their jobs and working reduced hours, it was "only right" he claimed 10% less.

No party won control in May and the council is run by a Labour minority.

Mr Adamson said: "The economic downturn has had a big impact on many people in the district. Many people have lost their jobs or are working reduced hours, while many have had their pay frozen.

"In these tough economic times, I felt it was only right that my special responsibility allowance should be reduced."
