North Staffordshire seizures of fake spirits and wine
Hundreds of bottles of counterfeit spirits and wine have been taken away in five seizures at north Staffordshire off-licences since June.
Four of them have taken place in Newcastle-under-Lyme, with one in the Staffordshire Moorlands area.
Staffordshire County Council said there were no seizures in its area in the 2010/11 financial year.
Retailers have been warned public protection officers will monitor premises.
Methanol as well as chloroform and isopropanol, which are both commonly used in cleaning products, have been found in counterfeit bottles of vodka, the council said.
