Banger driver killed at Hednesford Hills Raceway named

A man who died in a collision at a banger car race in Staffordshire has been named by police.

David Weare, 43, from Honiton in Devon, was confirmed dead at Hednesford Hills Raceway at about 15:15 BST on Sunday.

Staffordshire Police described the incident near Cannock as an "extremely tragic accident" and said an investigation was under way.

Mr Weare was believed to have been fatally injured when he was struck by another car during a race, police said.

Ch Insp Carl Ratcliffe said local environment officers from Cannock Chase Council would lead the investigation, as the race was a licensed event.

He said the force would work closely with the council and appealed for anyone with video footage of the incident to come forward.

Paul Gerrard, race director at Incarace, said it was a tragic accident in a sport in which Mr Weare loved to take part.
