New Vic Theatre funding to be monitored by council
Funding for a Staffordshire theatre could be more closely monitored in the future by local councillors.
Newcastle Borough Council gives the New Vic Theatre an annual grant - this financial year, almost £100,000.
Given the size of the grant, councillors are currently looking at how the theatre's trust uses the money and what impact it has.
It is part of a review by the local authority of its grants to the voluntary and community sector (CVS).
The theatre is the biggest recipient of funding and the money it gets represents 22% of what the council makes available to the CVS.
Earlier this year it was announced that the £1m grant that the theatre receives from the Arts Council would be safe until 2015.
The New Vic has had national recognition for its productions and its work with schools and community groups.
It opened in 1986 and was the first purpose built theatre-in-the-round in Europe.
