Crewe link road: £16m funding announced

Business leaders in Cheshire have welcomed the announcement of about £16m of government funds for a link road.

The £27m Crewe Green Link Road would create an alternative bypass for Crewe, improving access to major routes.

Chancellor George Osborne made the announcement as part of his Autumn Statement.

John Dunning, head of South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce said the news would "lever in" private sector investment and potentially create 12,000 jobs.

Mr Dunning said the new road had been part of the blue print for Crewe for many years.

East Cheshire Council said the link road was a key part of the regeneration strategy for Crewe.

It would unlock the potential of two major employment sites at Basford, the council added.

According to Mr Dunning, a small sum of money would come from the council and the rest would come from developers.

He said the overseeing of the development and direction of the plan would now be led by the private sector.
