Armed officers and negotiators continue to surround a house in Stoke-on-Trent following reports of a man in distress.

A police cordon was erected in Guildford Street, Shelton, at about 13:00 GMT on Wednesday and up to 30 homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Most of the residents affected are staying with relatives, although a temporary rest centre has been set up.

Staffordshire Police said the man lived alone and the siege was being treated as an isolated incident.

The force said it was working hard to bring the situation to a safe conclusion.
