An elderly couple have died in a house fire in the Staffordshire Moorlands.

Firefighters were called to Hurst Road, Biddulph Moor, at about 19:00 GMT on Thursday.

Station manager Carl Mason said crews searched the property and found the couple in the rear lounge.

An investigation into the cause is under way, but the fire service said the circumstances were not believed to be suspicious.

'Proud couple'

"We are very interested in the lifestyle of the occupants of the house," said Mr Mason.

"They did spend a lot of time in the house, and there's a lot of portable heaters that we're particularly interested in."

The couple have not been officially named by police.

One of their neighbours, Mick Nicholls, said: "They were both very, very deaf and both very, very infirm.

"But they wouldn't move. They were a very proud couple."
