Councillors are to look at changing the road layout at a traffic junction in Stoke-on-Trent which has seen 26 collisions in three years.

The Smallthorne roundabouts, a mile outside Burslem town centre, consist of three mini roundabouts which control six roads leading into the crossroads.

Local residents say the road layout is "confusing" for drivers.

Paul Reed, from Smallthorne Village Residents' Association, said some drivers prefer a four-mile detour.

"You've really got to take your time moving on to these," he said.

A statement by Stoke-on-Trent City Council said funds were available for an improvement scheme which will go before the council cabinet on Thursday.

"If approved, the first step will be to investigate the causes of accidents in the area in order to identify measures needed to improve the site," it said.
