Higher allowances suggested for Stoke-on-Trent councillors

An independent report has recommended that councillors in Stoke-on-Trent should have a rise in allowances.

The Independent Members' Remuneration Panel is suggesting all councillors receive a further £1,000 for 2012/2013, taking the payment to £12,000.

Councillors will decide about the proposals at a meeting next week.

The Labour-controlled authority approved cuts of £24m last month and said about 300 jobs would be lost in the next year.

The panel has looked at allowances at the council since 2003.

Details of councillors' allowances have been published online since last August.
