Stoke-on-Trent couple jailed for abusing babies

A Staffordshire couple have been jailed for abusing and neglecting two babies.

The children were treated for fractured legs in 2010 and one of them also had fractured ribs.

Mark Pugh, 35, and Angie Pugh, 29, both from Hanley in Stoke-on-Trent, were found guilty of three counts of cruelty to a person under 16.

The pair were sentenced to nine months and six months respectively at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court. Staffordshire Police "welcomed" the sentences.

Det Con Jim Ward, from the force's child protection unit, said: "The safety and wellbeing of children is a top priority.

"We take all reports of child abuse and neglect very seriously and we work closely with partner agencies to ensure that vulnerable children are safeguarded.

"In all cases where child abuse is reported we will carry out a thorough and detailed investigation to bring perpetrators to justice."
