Stoke-on-Trent by-election: City Independents gain from Labour

Labour has lost a seat on Stoke-on-Trent City Council after the City Independents party won a by-election.

Jacqueline Barnes was elected as councillor for the Springfields and Trent Vale ward after gaining 320 votes in Thursday's poll.

Ms Barnes was 125 votes ahead of her nearest rival, Labour candidate Mubsira Aumir. The turnout was about 21%.

The seat became vacant after Sarah Hill resigned from her position with the Labour-run authority in April.

Ms Hill had been dropped from its cabinet because she mounted a failed leadership challenge against Mohammed Pervez.

Ms Barnes, who becomes the eighth City Independents councillor, said she hopes to "do the area proud".

He said: "I've always worked voluntarily with the community. I've got big strong views on communities."
