A fire involving 250 mattresses at a furniture store in Stoke-on-Trent was started deliberately, the fire service has said.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said the mattresses were stacked up in a yard next to a UK Clearing House warehouse on Moorland Road in Burslem.

The building was not damaged in the fire, which started at about 04:30 BST.

A spokesman said: "We believe the fire was deliberate and further investigations are ongoing."

He added: "The owners were lucky that the building did not catch fire and it could've easily spread to surrounding businesses so we're urging local firms to make sure external premises are free from rubbish and materials."
